Ace’s love for Rose wasn’t a fairy tale love. It wasn’t love at first sight, or the kind where they swooned into each other’s arms and lived happily ever after. No, his love was much deeper than that.
When Ace first met Rose he didn’t pay her any extra attention. She was just another mare of Flash’s, just another guard duty. Ace watched how she was sweet, gentle, and seemed to care more about others than own well being. He was disgusted with her sugary sweet personality; it was revolting. However, he could not get her out of his head. Every time he closed his eyes there she was, the sun-kissed mare with the bouncy curly-kewed locks. Ace was maddened with her, she would not leave his head. He decided to take this new form of anger out in his duties, making sure he was meaner than usual. Flash was happy with this change, Ace was eager and motivated to hurt and punish. This behaviour continued for some time but it was not the right cure. Ace began to notice that Rose was regularly leaving the herd before it caught Flash’s attention. He decided to follow her on the second time he saw her leave. His head told him to tell Flash right away and revel in the praise that would be given, but his heart said NO. He couldn’t. Wouldn’t. At that moment he realized that his anger was not anger. It was love, pure and whole-hearted love. His whole body seemed to sigh with relief as he came to this conclusion. It was like he was at peace with himself and the world.
As he stood in the forest, finally at peace with his thoughts, he continued to follow her. He wanted to tell her, to let her know how he felt. Ace was so excited with this emotional discovery that he could not let it hide inside of him. He wanted to shout it to the world! He began to gallop through the forest, careening as fast as he could and paying no attention to how loud he was. Carelessly he hit a branch on the forest floor and stumbled to a sudden stop in the bushes. As he looked up there was Rose… But… She was not paying attention to the racaous he had just caused. Instead she was lovingly greeting a bay stallion. This confused Ace, messing with his senses. What, no, this isn’t happening. What is happening?
By the time his confusion passed he understood what he saw. Rose was in love. Ace was in love. This other stallion was in love. There was no room for Ace in the equation.
Ace didn’t move from the bushes as he began to feel cold. Goose bumps littered his flesh and his eyes went blurry. By this time, Rose and Darko had left, not knowing that Ace was nearby or that he was just about to confess his love to Rose. Ace got up slowly, turned, and walked back towards the herd. He tried to be angry with Rose, tried to find some reason to hate her again. But there was none. He simply loved her too much.
